Can Liverpool Strike Goals To Lift Title?

Football is indeed a funny old game but one thing remains, to win a match you simply need to score more goals than your opponents. That is why in-form goalscoring strikers are worth their weight in gold and in the English Premier League (EPL) at the moment no one seems as deadly in front of goal as Liverpool.

This one important knack might just see the Anfield club secure their first league title in twenty-three years!

As Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City faltered this weekend, deadly Liverpool took full advantage and convincingly strolled past Tottenham. The 4-0 victory over Spurs has seen ‘The Reds’ hit the top spot in the EPL.

A huge plus Liverpool have over their rivals has been the form of strikers Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez. Both forwards have been lethal this season with Uruguayan Suarez grabbing 29 goals and Sturridge netting 20 times in the league.

In contrast Chelsea don’t have an out and out striker in form. Classy frontman Samuel Eto’o currently has an injury and at 33 his prolific best seems to be behind him. Former Liverpool favourite Fernando Torres only has four league goals to his name this season. Against Crystal Palace yesterday Chelsea showed that they really do need a top-class striker to be called upon for the tight games.

Man City have the strikers but can’t seem to keep them all fit at the crucial moments. Stevan Jovetic has the potential to be a Premier League star but has had too many injuries so far in his City career. The big, big loss has been Sergio Aguero, who has missed a big chunk of games lately. The Argentine is the most consistent scorer Manuel Pellegrini has at his disposal and even with his lack of game time this season he has still got fifteen goals in fifteen league starts. Alvaro Negredo started off well at the Etihad but the Spaniard hasn’t scored since the end of January. That has left Edin Dzeko and midfielder Yaya Toure to carry the biggest load when it has come to scoring goals at this important stage of the season.

Arsenal have only really had Oliver Giroud up top all season and he along with the rest of the ‘Gunners’ has looked tired and far from lethal in front of goal in recent weeks.

The other advantage Liverpool have, is the fact that both of their strikers are also working in tandem together. Of course they want to score themselves but they look equally happy when their striking partner gets a goal. The new ‘SaS’ combination also feed well off of each other and have a great rapport with one another. The two constantly look out for each other and provide plenty of ammunition for their club colleagues. The dangerous twosome have provided eighteen assists between them this season.

Although the goals from the front two have been incredible and vitally important for Liverpool we shouldn’t forget that the whole team seems ready to help the cause by chipping in with a few goals of their own. Eleven members of the ‘Reds’ playing pool has a goal to their name. With captain Steven Gerrard finding the net eleven times. Defender Martin Skrtel has also impressed with a very healthy return of six goals.

At the present moment in time Liverpool have all the momentum. They have an exciting coach who likes to win football and to do it with style. They have little in the way of injuries and unlike the rest, they haven’t had a weekly European distraction sapping away at their energy levels.

They still need to prove they are worthy title challengers by beating Chelsea or Man City but you wouldn’t bet against them doing that in the next month. Just look at their results against Arsenal, Spurs, Man Utd and Everton in this calendar year alone! It has given the Anfield crowd plenty of confidence and that helps the players continue with their recent heroics.

Just think about this Liverpool fans, if you do win the title this season then you will have well and truly ruined Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement plans and he can’t do anything about it.

If, and its still a big if in my opinion, Liverpool do secure the league trophy in May then the glut of goals they have scored will be seen as the catalyst. They would also deserve it as they’ve been on of the most exciting sides to watch in England this campaign! But Jose’s Chelsea and Pellegrini’s City are waiting for any slip ups to take the title for themselves!
