Why Liverpool Need To Keep Daniel Sturridge
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has failed to claim a Premier League goal so far this season.
The England international has only started four times this term and he’s made five further substitute appearances.
Unfortunately for Sturridge, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has found a winning system without needing the attacker in his team.
The Liverpool forward line has looked sensational at times this season with Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho all playing scintillating football. Between them the trio have racked up sixteen goals and ten assists.
Klopp’s new look Reds side now sit in the top four and are just four points off leaders Chelsea (with Liverpool having a game in hand).
So Sturridge has been left kicking his heels on the sidelines.
That will cause frustration within the striker who has always possessed confidence in his own ability. But I hope he doesn’t do anything rash in January like handing in a transfer request.
I also hope that Liverpool aren’t tempted by any decent offer that comes in for the hitman. West Ham have been credited with an interest.
If you look at Liverpool at the moment, Coutinho is out and Firmino is struggling with a knock. It’s just a shame that the forward is also out with yet another injury.
If Sturridge can regain his fitness then he might find a route back into the starting line-up this month.
Klopp might believe that Daniel doesn’t offer enough in terms of his all round ability but the German will know that the forward does offer vital goals when given the right opportunities.
Looking at the current Liverpool squad, Sturridge still looks like he’s the best natural finisher within the pool.
That ability to come alive in the box could prove vital, especially in difficult times like the Christmas period and the end of season run-in.
When you look at Sturbridge’s goal against Sevilla in the Europa Cup final or the one for England against Wales in Euro 2016, then you see just watch he gives you out of very little. Plus it also shows that he can score in vital games too.
So for me, I’d say that the player could still be very important to Liverpool this campaign as long as he can get back to full fitness and take his chances when they come.
Jurgen Klopp seems to agree and wants to keep his team together in January:
“There is absolutely no idea to sell anybody from the first-team squad. It wouldn’t make sense.”
“Unfortunately Daniel is not in training. That’s what I’m most concerned about”
So Sturridge needs to concentrate on getting fit, back in the Liverpool team, back amongst the goals and not think about moving in January.
A prolific Daniel Sturridge, even if it’s from the bench, could move Liverpool closer to the Premier League title this season because goalscorers are golden!
