Chelsea Should Forget Cech And Chase Kasper Schmeichel

It’s looking increasingly likely that Chelsea will lose their number one goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid this summer.

Talks over a new deal between Chelsea and the Belgian shot-stopper stalled some time ago and Real look set to sign the World Cup golden glove winner in a €40m transfer.

That leaves us wondering who’ll replace the two time Premier League winner at Stamford Bridge?

Three names currently seem to top the list for new Blues boss Maurizio Sarri. They are AS Roma’s Alisson, Arsenal’s Petr Cech and Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel.

Others may interest Sarri include Jack Butland and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Getting Alisson in could prove problematic unless the Blues launch a stunning late bid. It’s being widely reported that Liverpool have made the Brazilian international their number one target and have had an offer accepted for the twenty-five year old.

I’d be wary of Chelsea re-signing former hero Cech from rivals Arsenal. The Czech Republic star hasn’t been as good for The Gunners as he was for The Blues. He seems to have lost something; whether it be speed in his reflexes or his concentration levels may have dipped I’m not sure but he hasn’t been as influential at the Emirates. It’s always hard for a veteran to return to his former stomping ground and rediscover his old form.

Personally’ I’d plump for Danish keeper Schmeichel.

At thirty-one years of age, Kasper is entering the prime years for a goalie.

At Leicester, he was a major reason for the Foxes winning the Premier League title in memorable fashion in 2016. During that campaign only Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United conceded less than Leicester City did as they won the top flight championship. He also impressed in his one season playing Champions League football with the East Midlands side.

Last season, Schmeichel kept eight clean-sheets and made ninety-three saves in thirty-three league outings. He also saved two penalties and made twenty-five sweeper clearances, both of those stats were better than Courtois managed at Chelsea last term.

Like his dad Peter; Kasper offers a presence in between the sticks, a voice to command defenders and a strong winning mentality.

Kasper enjoyed a successful World Cup with Denmark, where he was one of the better keepers on show. He kept two clean-sheets in Russia including one against eventual winners France. He also saved a penalty from Croatia’s Luka Modric, who would go on to win the Golden Ball award. During the tournament, the Foxes shot-stopper broke the record for going the longest period without conceding in a Danish shirt, a record that was previously held by his dad.

I’m not saying that Kasper Schmeichel will be or should be the next first choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge.

But if the Blues do decide to bring in the Great Dane, then I don’t think he’ll let them down. He’s a big game player and a keeper that gives his all!
