Manchester City Should Make Napoli Man Kalidou Koulibaly A Priority Signing

I think we can all agree that Vincent Kompany isn’t getting any younger, yet the Manchester City defender is still probably the best centre half at the football club.

Unfortunately for manager Pep Guardiola and Man City, the club captain is prone to injuries as he’s getting older.

Nicolas Otamendi had a terrific season last term, helping The Citizens to secure the Premier League title, but he has made some rather rash mistakes in the past.

Both John Stones and Aymeric Laporte are superb talents but they still aren’t consistent enough to be classed a world stars. I’m sure it will come but I also feel City could be doing with a more reliable defender that could walk in and improve the team consistently.

Personally, I think Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly would be a great addition to the Man City squad, if Pep is on the lookout for a new central defender.

The Senegal internationalist is a man mountain and he has the ability to seem constantly composed.

Serie A side Napoli defeated Liverpool in the Champions League this week and Koulibaly managed to walk through the game. The forward trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino caused Man City’s defence endless amounts of trouble last term, yet they were extremely quiet as Kalidou mopped up any danger last night.

Guardiola loves a defender that can pass their way out of the backline and keep possession for his team.

So far during this campaign, Koulibaly has managed an average passing success rate of 90.7% in his first seven Italian top flight fixtures. Last season, the twenty-seven year old was up at 91.3% in thirty-five league games. He also managed to pop up with five goals, showing he’s capable in the opposite penalty area too.

Defensively, he makes between 1.5 and 2 tackles per game. He is also smart enough and quick to get on hand and make interceptions and clearances. He shows a clean proficiency when it comes to winning duels against opposition attackers.

The bonus in favour of Koulibaly is that he’d be able to partner any of the other centre-backs currently at City. He’s strong and fast enough to act as a deterrent and good enough on the ball to play the Pep way.

Having played under current Chelsea gaffer, Maurizio Sarri at Napoli, you know Kalidou Koulibaly would be able to walk into the Manchester City side and be right on the team’s wavelength from the get go!

It would take a mammoth fee to bring the African defender to the Etihad but he could be the player that gives Pep Guardiola the perfect defence that he’s always been looking for!

  1. Why would City ever want to deal with Napoli again? DeLaurentiis is an unreliable disingenuous pi$$ taker – there are more fish in the sea.
