Mauricio Pochettino Needs To Show His Teeth At Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur were humiliated last night as Bayern Munich came to London and thumped Spurs 7-2 in the Champions League (BBC Sport Match Report).

The home team just collapsed against the German giants.

Now we can all have off nights but Tottenham haven’t had a great start to this campaign.

Now dissenting voices can be heard in North London stating that manager Mauricio Pochettino is no longer interested in his own project at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He’s had a few digs at the board and questioned his own job in the summer:

“I am not in charge, I know nothing about the situation of my players. I am only coaching them, trying to get the best from them.”

“Maybe the club need to change my title description, because my job now is to coach the team. It is not a question for me, it is a question for the club. Maybe the club are going to change my title description.”

Spurs seem to be suffering from a hangover after reaching last season’s Champions League final. They’ve still to record a victory in that competition since losing that final to Liverpool. They took the lead against both Bayern and Olympiacos yet didn’t win either.

They were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Colchester United. I honestly think that’s a big missed opportunity. Just look at how managers like Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho have always treated the League Cup as the ideal competition to breed a winning mentality. It could’ve been an ideal way to bring silverware back to the club.

In the Premier League, things haven’t been disastrous as they are lying in sixth spot. But even with that, Spurs are behind London rivals West Ham United and Arsenal and they’re already ten points by league leaders Liverpool. They threw away a two goal lead to draw with The Gunners, lost to a struggling Newcastle United and they also lost to Leicester City after again taking the lead.

Heading into Tottenham’s first ever Champions League final, Mauricio ominously stated:

“To win the Champions League with Tottenham, in this circumstance, in this season, maybe I need to think a little bit to do something different in the future, for sure. Because to repeat this miracle, you know…”

Now I know Spurs didn’t win that trophy but was Pochettino already thinking of leaving?

The Argentine might now believe he’s hit the ceiling at Tottenham and may think he could do a job at struggling giants Real Madrid or Manchester United.

The Lilywhites players have always seemed to give their all for the gaffer but they too have looked distracted this term. As I’ve already pointed out (a few times) they have folded in games that they’ve been winning.

Main creator Christian Eriksen hasn’t really turned up yet this season. The Dane was linked with a move to Real in the summer and it does seem as though his mind is elsewhere at the moment.

Poch has also chopped and changed his backline and that has led to a bit of inconsistency.

The future of quite a few first team squad members is still up in the air and that is just yet another distraction the club doesn’t need!

As the team struggles, main striker Harry Kane seems to have decided to that he needs to do everyone else’s job. That has seen him drop deeper and start trying to create for others with crosses but that means he’s no longer the potent focal point in his side’s attack.

The North London club are in a bit of a slump.

No matter where Mauricio Pochettino believes he’ll end up, and I’m not saying he’s think of leaving, he needs to sort out this mess first!

The Argentine boss needs to find a settled defence, get the players back on track with his game plan and have Kane playing as a proper number nine again.

Spurs do suffer from slumps during a season but this one feels slightly different. Mauricio needs to be more ruthless, stop the moaning and show once again that he can get Tottenham Hotspur shining once again.
