Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer Would Be Good Defensive Acquisition For Arteta’s Arsenal

Media reports suggest that Arsenal will make a move for Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer once the transfer window reopens (Via The Scottish Sun).

Personally I think it could be a very astute move from Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

Some of Arsenal’s faithful might be nervous about going back into the Scottish market and purchasing another player from the Scottish Premiership champions.

They paid a lot for left-back Kieran Tierney last summer and his debut season has been curtailed by injuries. That being said I think they’ve seen enough of the Scottish internationalist to understand that he is a good player and will hopefully stay fit and improve their backline. Trust me Tierney has the ability to shine in the Premier League much like fellow Scot Andrew Robertson has done at Liverpool.

Arteta certainly won’t scoff at the standard of the Scottish game, as he himself played for Rangers during his early days as a player.

Norwegian international Ajer has all the tools needed to fit into the style Mikel wants to implement at The Emirates.

Kristoffer is happy to play from the back and having the ball at his feet. The defender is versatile and fast enough to play as a right-back but he’s more suited to playing as a centre-back. His intelligence, mobility and ability on the ball also means he can fill-in as a holding midfielder if needed.

He may only be twenty-two years of age, but he already has plenty of experience to his name. After impressing in Norway with IK Start, Ajer would captain that side as a sixteen year old, he moved to Celtic in what was a bargain deal for the Glasgow club.

Ayer would move to Kilmarnock on a loan deal. He impressed there and that move got him used to the Scottish game. Once back at Celtic Park, the youngster managed to break into their first-team side. Ajer has been a regular ever since, helping the Glasgow giants to back to back domestic trebles.

The player has also started making a name for himself for his international side, he now has 14 caps for Norway.

It’s no coincidence that Leicester City are also interested in the defender’s signature (Source Leicester Mercury). Foxes gaffer Brendan Rodgers was a big fan of the Norwegian’s when the two worked together at Parkhead:

“I think he’ll go to the very highest of the game,” said Brendan Rodgers.

“He did very well out on loan with Kilmarnock and then came back to us last year and did very well.”

Ajer would probably flourish alongside an elder statesman if he joined The Gunners. Someone like Sokratis or David Luiz.

Being 6ft5, Kristoffer is also very good in the air and can be a threat in both boxes. He’s also a young player that isn’t scared of the big occasions, in fact he seems to thrive in the important games.

Much like former Celtic centre-back Virgil van Dijk, Ajer looks elegant when playing at the back. For me, he has been the best centre-half to play for The Hoops since Van Dijk’s departure in 2015.

I have no doubts that Kristoffer Ajer would raise his standards if he moves to the English top flight. He learns quickly and plays to his strengths very well. He is extremely bright and is someone who continually strives to get better.

I think if he were to leave Celtic this summer, then Arsenal might be an ideal destination. I believe he would flourish under Mikel Arteta and improve The Gunners backline.
