Spurs Should Chase Young French Star Centre Back

It has been a pretty disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur this term, especially during the run in.

The Lilywhites are on the lookout for a new manager and might also look at having a bit of an overhaul of the playing squad too.

One area that could do with improving is the centre of defence. Spurs have conceded forty-one times this term and that’s the same amount as sixteenth placed Brighton & Hove Albion.

Eric Dier is still unconvincing as an out and out centre-back and Teamtalk are reporting that Spurs are set to sell Davinson Sanchez this summer.

I’m pretty sure Tottenham will look to go back to the days where they would scout and sign up-and-coming talents you can find their potential in North London.

With that in mind, maybe Daniel Levy and his recruitment team can have a look at French youngster Maxence Lacroix.

The twenty-one year old has been one of the best performing defenders in the Bundesliga this season.

He has helped his Wolfsburg team into third place ahead of Borussia Dortmund, they currently have the second best defensive record in the German top flight.

Lacroix has very similar traits to Real Madrid star Raphael Varane. He’s smart, constantly switched on and is good in a foot race.

In his twenty-eight league appearances for Wolfsburg this year, Maxence averages around 4.5 clearances. He also makes over two interceptions per game and 1.6 tackles. The French Under-20 international likes to be the one that steps out of the defensive line and make quick interceptions. That is great for teams that want to make turnovers further up the field and make quick breakaways.

The defender isn’t just good at being on the front foot. He can also do sterling work inside his own penalty area, as he makes a lot of strong blocks when strikes are aimed at his goal.

The youngster is also fairly cool on the ball and has a passing success rate that averages above 83% (Stats from Whoscored). He likes to switch ball into the flanks or feed it into the midfielders. That is the kind of fluidity that Spurs need from their backline.

At 6’3″, Maxence also has the physical presence needed to fit into the Premier League lifestyle.

His performances have been impressive. Teammate and Wolfsburg keeper Koen Casteels has come out and praised the young Frenchman:

“He arrived here from France and I was amazed at how well he adapted to the level here. He’s a very talented boy.”

Bundesliga News have reported that Maxence Lacroix has recently rejected two new contracts from his current employers. That could give Levy an avenue to step up and make the defender a big part of a summer recruitment drive to take Spurs back into the Premier League’s Top Four.

  1. I keep seeing articles saying sanchez is going to be sold but little mention of dier who has been just as bad if not worse. Dier has played in the pl a lot longer than sanchez but still makes so many bad decisions. Time to move him, Sanchez and Toby who is sadly too old on in the summer.
