Footballers Who Have Found Themselves In Trouble In The Media
Over the years, footballers seem to be finding themselves in trouble on a regular basis. The media are starting to find out more about footballers and their issues, especially in recent times. Over the last few years, there have been a number of famous cases – such as the Ched Evans sentence and more recently, Adam Johnson’s charges – of footballers that have found themselves in trouble. Here we take a look at some of the other examples where players have been caught out and discuss the incidents in question.
Kelvin Etuhu was jailed after a street brawl
The former Manchester City player was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment after a drunken street brawl that saw another man left with a broken jaw. Etuhu, who was released by the club in 2011, was caught on camera violently beating up 25-year-old Owen Fitzpatrick after a dispute in a cocktail bar. The 22-year-old had already floored Fitzpatrick with a brutal punch before continuing to kick the victim three times while he was on the ground. As well as the broken jaw, Fitzpatrick suffered a number of cuts and bruises across his body but no other major injuries.
Papiss Cisse went against his religious beliefs
The Newcastle United striker was caught out after he went against his religious beliefs. The Senegal international informed the club that he would refuse to wear the kit after Newcastle signed a new sponsorship deal with Wonga – claiming that it would contradict his religion. However, an image was leaked of Cisse gambling in a casino shortly after the news was released. Of course, gambling itself is not a problem, and with many online sites such as Betway offering casino games, there can be temptation. However, people were shocked at the 29-year-old’s hypocrisy after he was adamant that he would not wear the new club kit. In the end, Cisse did agree to wear the kit and all was forgiven.
Kevin Grobkreutz threw a kebab at a fan
The German footballer was investigated for assault after he threw a kebab at a group of FC Koln supporters on a night out. The 25-year-old was out with a fellow Borussia Dortmund player and, after they were confronted by Koln fans, he reportedly threw the kebab at the supporters. However, the Dortmund midfielder hit back at these claims and revealed that, although he did throw the kebab, he aimed it at the floor as a sign of frustration after the Koln fans were chanting at him.
