Growing up in the nineties I looked on in amazement as Italy seemed to mass produce wonderful forward after wonderful forward. You had the likes of Roberto Baggio, Pippo Inzaghi, Alessandro Del Piero, Christian Vieri and Gianluca Vialli all scoring more than fifteen goals each for the Azzurri. You then had attacking stars like Roberto […]

The current Serie A season might only be five games old but AC Milan still look too inconsistent and already seem to be out of any potential title race. In their most recent league fixture, Milan threw away a lead twice as they were held at home to Atalanta. After four matches AC Milan are […]

Growing up in the nineties I adored watching Italian football and Fiorentina would often catch the eye. They would have a phenomenal goal machine in Gabriel Batistuta, a creative spark in the majestic Rui Costa, an industrious forward in Luis Oliveira, a dynamic midfielder in Stefan Effenberg, a fine shot-stopper in Francesco Toldo and a crazy flamboyant […]

Manchester United are looking brighter, Jose Mourinho’s side have won their last three games after beating Young Boys tonight in the Champions League. Those victories don’t completely paper over the cracks at Old Trafford and you’d expect the Portuguese boss will want to recruit a few new faces when the transfer window reopens in January. […]

I spent last week in Italy and even though the Azzurri didn’t make it to the World Cup, the country is still gripped by all the goings on in Russia. Yet there’s another story gripping the nation and that’s the possibility of Cristiano Ronaldo signing for Italian champions Juventus. You’ll see Ronaldo’s image on all […]

Marco Veratti has been a strong performer for PSG over the years, winning five Ligue 1 titles since his arrival from Pescara since 2012. Last season wasn’t the Italian’s finest in the French capital. It’s not that I think he has lost his talent or was particularly poor, it’s more that he was going through […]

Now that most domestic seasons are starting to wind down, I thought it was time to think about the World Cup. In June, Russia will host their first World Cup but in this article I thought I’d look back at one of my favourite competitions and that was USA 94. I was ten, when that […]

I loved the Italian World Cup 2006 winning team. They had so many superstars in that squad and in various positions too. They had defensive discipline (well they were Italian after all), they had great passing midfielders and sublime forwards who could unlock the sternest of defences. They also had a squad with such a […]

I have just arrived home after a terrific holiday to Florence. I enjoyed the sun, art, food and the scenery. But I also managed to take some time out and visit ACF Fiorentina’s Stadio Artemio Franchi. Not the easiest to walk to from the city centre but I’m really glad I made the effort!

When I think about world class players playing well into their thirties then it’s usually Italian stars that come to mind. Players like Franco Baresi, Gianfranco Zola, Paolo Maldini, Fabio Cannavaro, Alessandro Del Piero, Andrea Pirlo and Francesco Totti all enjoyed vast careers as top, top talents. Age never seemed to dull them of their […]
