Advice For The Set Pieces Old Firm Challenge

fm17-banner-v2

So after Iain Macintosh woefully tried to manage Everton this season in his first Football Manager project of the campaign, the wonderful Set Pieces website have come up with another unique FM17 challenge.

The challenge basically consists of Iain taking over Celtic and doing his best not to balls things up again. But this time he’ll have a real life opponent and not just battle with himself and his laptop, which was hard enough!

Step forward fellow journalist Alex Stewart who will take over the reigns at Celtic’s main rivals Rangers.

Iain will ‘be promoting attacking football, youth academy graduates and a blend of flawed romanticism thoroughly at odds with the modern game’.

While Alex will be using a money-ball approach at Ibrox.

Both obviously have the ambition of winning the Scottish Premiership and doing their upmost not to be given their jotters by their respective boards. It’s a fantastic idea and one you can find out more on the Set pieces site.

Even in the land of make believe or in this case the magical world of Football Manager, Old Firm fans will be passionate and take offence at any one failing their club.

So as a lifelong Glaswegian I feel it’s my duty to advise the two competitors on Glasgow footballing etiquette:

Iain at Celtic

  • You need to give the fans entertaining football. Even dull 1-0 wins aren’t acceptable at Celtic Park
  • During every blog post you need to mention what a great manager Jock Stein was and how rich Celtic’s traditions and history are.
  • Celtic fans will think better if you have a ‘Celtic minded’ backroom staff. So make sure you have someone in there that has played for the club.
  • Don’t ask for more money from the board, they’ll just laugh at you.
  • Talk up the fanbase… A LOT!
  • Do well in your Champions League home games (don’t worry about away ties in Europe).
  • Remember that there is a bias against Celtic from the establishment (SFA).
  • Tell everyone how Celtic are the best club in Scotland & you supported them as an infant.
  • Watch this video of a Hoops legend!

Alex at Rangers

  • You need to wear a suit at all times, with the club tie and brown brogues. Even Gazza had to adhere to this rule, even when it clashed with his Versace shirts!
  • Win at all costs. Winning goes above winning with style.
  • Don’t be afraid to attack the media and claim they’re all Celtic supporters that have no clue. This is how you deal with the press!
  • Make sure your medical team double no triple check your new signing’s knees for any previous issues.
  • Mention how great Ibrox is and how lucky you are to have a training complex like Murray Park.
  • Slag off Mike Ashley and Sports Direct.
  • This is Rangers and always has been Rangers. They were founded in 1872.
  • Spend all the money that you can.
  • State that Rangers are the best team in Scotland and mention how they are the most successful side in the world.

So there you have it. Notice that I gave you nine points in a row each? That’s a very significant number in Glasgow and I had to give you the same amount so no one cries foul about being biased, yes the fans can get wound up by the smallest of things!

Oh one more thing make sure you beat the other one!

Good Luck.
