Rangers Fans Won’t Be Surprised By Steven Gerrard’s Links To Liverpool Job

I think if you were to ask most football fans around the world what team they think of when you mention Steven Gerrard, the vast majority of them will say Liverpool!
He was a Champions League winning captain for The Reds and Anfield was his home for the most part of his career. He even started his coaching career back at Melwood.
He’ll forever be remembered as a Liverpool legend.
So I wasn’t surprised to hear that current Reds boss Jurgen Klopp believes that Steven might be the ideal man that replaces him as the Liverpool manager, once the German decides to step away from the Anfield touchline.
Speaking to Four Four Two magazine Klopp said this:
“Kenny and Stevie have both been a really big support from day one.”
“Second, my position as a manager has nothing to do with the people around me. If Liverpool were to sack me tomorrow, then maybe Kenny would be the first choice to replace me, but they would probably bring Stevie down from Glasgow.
“If you ask who should follow me, I’d say Stevie. I help him whenever I can.”

Now Gerrard is currently the manager of Rangers. Is it wrong for someone at Liverpool to go into so much detail about a possible succession plan?
I’m sure the Ibrox board and even Gerrard himself would’ve preferred it not to be public news but I don’t think anyone is really surprised that this seems to be the eventual plan.
That will include Rangers fans. They all know that their gaffer has a deep love for Liverpool Football Club. They also understand loyalty and most of them will expect Steven to leave for Anfield, if Liverpool came calling. They’ve seen it before with Graeme Souness.
The important thing to remember in all this is that the Premier League side won’t sack Klopp tomorrow. The German has just secured the club yet another Champions League trophy in May and has them leading the English top flight by five points. Klopp is fast becoming another god like figure for Reds supporters.
So there’s absolutely no need for the current Gers gaffer to take his eye off the ball in Govan. In actual fact, if Gerrard is to ever get the Liverpool managerial gig then he’ll have to prove himself at Rangers first.
Liverpool won’t just hire him because of his reputation as a club captain and legend. They’ll need to know that he can handle himself in the dugout.
That’s a big reason, in my opinion, for Steven coming to Glasgow in the first place. He’s here to win things and turn things around at a big club.
He has impressed thus far but he still has things to prove up here.
He has made Rangers the second force in the Scottish Premiership, he has also enjoyed wins over current champions Celtic. He was the only Gers boss that secured a win over a Brendan Rodgers Celtic team.
Rangers have also looked a very good team in Europe under Gerrard. He has lost just twice in twenty-three European games and he’s recorded wins over Feyenoord, Maribor, Rapid Vienna, Legia Warsaw and FC Midtjylland. Importantly he has also guided his side to the Europa League group stages in his two tries.
As a manager, I think Gerrard is improving and is learning from mistakes he made in his maiden year. He also seems to be getting the most from his players.
If Steven Gerrard can continue in his development and win silverware at Ibrox and then head back down to Liverpool, you’ll probably see a lot of understanding Rangers supporters lining the streets of Govan wishing him all the best.
That’s the thing, for Gerrard to go back to Anfield and be the number one guy there, he needs to prove himself a winner at Rangers first!
