Eto’o Making A Point At Chelsea

He may have only lasted ten minutes against Arsenal but that was enough time for Samuel Eto’o to get a goal and send Chelsea on the way to a 6-0 win.

When the Cameroonian international signed for the ‘Blues’ on the 29th of August many thought he was a panic buy or a bit of an after thought. A lot of commentators also questioned his ability and his desire after earning millions during his two year stint in Russia with Anzhi Makhachkala.

The 33 year old took time to settle in at Chelsea, get used to the English game and regain his full fitness.

But cream always rises to the top.

The classy striker still has that yard of pace that gets him away from defenders and he still has the brains to sniff out chances that younger more naive stars struggle to make the most of. His goal against West Brom was the ideal example of this, closing down a lost cause.

The frontman now has eleven goals in nineteen starts and seven substitute appearances.

Many of those goals have been in important games too. He got one against Arsenal, one in the Champions League knockout stage against Galatasaray, a brace versus Schalke in the Champions League, he claimed a strike in the match with local rivals Spurs and got the winner over title challengers Liverpool. He also bagged a hattrick against Manchester United in a 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Eto’o has also scored four more goals than Chelsea’s £50m hitman/flop Fernando Torres this season. Only free-spirit Eden Hazard has more strikes for Chelsea this term.

Jose Mourinho reportedly questioned Samuel’s age when discussing his lack of firepower at his disposal recently. But the Portuguese manager will have been delighted by Eto’o’s response as the ageing forward went on to score three goals in his last three games.

As I mentioned earlier Samuel Eto’o hobbled off after ten minutes against the Gunners after suffering from a thigh injury. Now all the Chelsea fans and management team will be hoping the former four time African player of the year winner can make a speedy recovery and get back on the goalscoring trail.

If Eto’o was bought as an after thought or was a panic buy then he has made a point in proving that he was worth the gamble, has great desire and is still a very useful striker to have in a quality team.

Is he worth another year at Chelsea? Well only time will tell but he wouldn’t be my first striker out of the door.
