Moyes Deserves Warm Reception At Goodison
A few weeks ago Mikel Arteta returned to Goodison Park and had a torrid time both on and off the park. The Everton faithful gave their former hero a rough occasion as the ‘Toffees’ thumped Arsenal 3-0.
This Easter weekend sees former Everton boss David Moyes return to his former footballing home with his new Manchester United side.
People are speculating what kind of reception the Scots manager will get when he steps foot in Merseyside again.
Current ‘Toffees’ gaffer Roberto Martinez believes his predecessor will get a warm welcome from the Goodison crowd. He had this to say during his pre-match press conference…
“We are a club full of integrity and style, so we will show the respect to David Moyes and what he’s done at our football club.”
But Moyes received some negative chants when Everton visited Old Trafford earlier in the season. With Everton beating their hosts, the away support started shouting ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning!’ at the Man Utd manager.
So its still up in the air as to what kind of reaction David Moyes will get this Sunday afternoon.
I hope the majority of the ‘Blues’ crowd respect their former chief and remember what he did for the club in his eleven years at the club.
He took them from relegation contenders to European hopefuls. He even managed to break into the EPL’s ‘Top Four’ for the first time in the clubs history. The fifty year old also guided the side to the FA Cup final in 2009.
The Merseyside club have benefited the most, so far, since the cordial parting of the ways between themselves and Moyes. The club are strongly challenging for fourth spot with Arsenal. Martinez has brought an exciting brand of football to the club and the fans seem rejuvenated since his arrival.
But never forget that a good core of the Everton first team and the majority of the squad were brought in by Moyes!
On the other hand David Moyes has had a disappointing start to life as Manchester Utd boss. His side are out of all three cup competitions, they have played some boring and turgid football and are seventh in the Premier League. United are a full nine points behind the ‘Toffees’. Moyes time at Old Trafford has been so bad, that their is a distinct possibility he won’t be there come August.
Some Everton fans have complained about David trying to low-ball his former side when it came to last summers transfer window. But at the end up, Everton held onto Leighton Baines (who has now signed a new four year deal) and got an incredible £27.5m for Marouane Fellaini, who may have struggled to find a place in Martinez’s new system and who has disappointed so far at Man United.
In fact when you look at it David Moyes is still helping out Everton. He paid over the odds for a player that was happy to leave and his woe in his debut season in Manchester has helped Everton climb above Man Utd and closer to fourth place finish.
Now don’t get me wrong. Everton supporters can sing and say what they want, as customers that is their right. I don’t mind a few comedic chants and sarcastic boos. I just hope their isn’t anything malicious or out of order being directed at the Manchester United boss this weekend. It should be remembered that David Moyes had a fantastic spell in charge of the ‘Toffees’.
I really hope that Goodison crowd take heed of their manager and show integrity, style and class.
