Man United Target Memphis Depay Would Be Better Fit Than Falcao

Manchester United have been heavily linked with PSV’s hotshot Memphis Depay in the last couple of months.

For me, he’d be a much better signing than Radamel Falcao has been this season.

Luckily for Man Utd, Falcao’s deal is just a loan (although a costly one).

The signing of the Colombian striker was a bit of a rushed move, it was more about Man United showing off that they could sign a ‘world-class’ player rather than sign someone who would fit into the team or the English Premier League.

It’s fair to suggest that Falcao has been more Fernando Torres than Diego Costa in terms of goals. Yesterday against Villa, he went for a superb volley but fluffed his lines and skied it into the Old Trafford crowd. That has summed up his time in Manchester.

His signing has kind of echoed Juan Veron’s, when he joined the ‘Red Devils’ in 2001. Both South American’s were used to teams being formed around them, but that wasn’t going to happen at Old Trafford for either gentleman.

As far as Falcao’s concerned, I think him moving elsewhere in the summer and getting a full preseason under his belt will be best for all concerned.

For me, Memphis Depay is much more of a Man United type signing.

Memphis is young, fast and hungry. He’d go to Old Trafford and be determined to be a success. Plus it looks like he’ll be available in the summer.

He’s also better on the lefthand side of a frontline, so not being too much of an immediate threat to Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie position.

This season in the Eredivisie the winger has smashed in an impressive nineteen goals in twenty-five starts.

Man United’s supporters would love to see a direct free-scoring pacey winger, that’s what they are used too with stars such as George Best, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo.

I’d imagine that the goal would be to have Depay settle into the English game on the left at first and then move him through the middle much like Ronaldo did from the right or Thierry Henry did at Arsenal.

United manager Louis van Gaal knows the twenty-one year old well, he took him to the World Cup last summer. Depay repaid Louis’ faith by scoring twice in Brazil.

Now some might ask ‘what about Angel Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj?’

Well both are versatile and can play on either wing. Di Maria can also play deeper. So there could be room for all of them in the squad, especially if Man Utd secure a Champions League berth.

Questions surround both Adnan and Angel in terms of whether they are happy and will stay beyond this season. One may leave but not both, in my opinion.

Both still need to convince Van Gaal that they are team players and willing to conform to his ideas. If you stall at Man Utd, then you’ll be replaced.

Manchester United have a good record with signing players from PSV Eindhoven.

Back in 1998 they took giant centre-back Jaap Stam and he helped them to the Champions League trophy in his debut season. They then brought in Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2001 and the Dutch striker scored a whopping 150 goals in his five seasons at Old Trafford.

If Memphis Depay can have a similar impact then he’d also become a hero for Man Utd fans. Unfortunately no amount of endeavour from Radamel Falcao will see him get such adulation.
