Signing Nathaniel Clyne Could Be Real Bargain For Liverpool
In fairness to Liverpool they haven’t sat back this summer after their disappointing end to last season.
In the past few weeks they’ve announced the signings of Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, James Milner and Roberto Firmino (subject to completing a medical).
Reports today suggest that the Anfield club have agreed a £12.5m fee with Southampton for right-back Nathaniel Clyne.
If they can conclude the deal for the full-back then that could seriously solve a problem that the ‘Reds’ have had on the right.
Loanee signing Javier Manquillo often failed to adapt to the rigours of the English game. Experienced England international Glen Johnson struggled to find consistency and was allowed to leave on a free this summer. While Jon Flanagan missed the entire campaign due to problematic knee injury.
With Clyne, Liverpool will be getting a strong full-back who can shore up the defence with his solid displays. The fact that likes to rampage forward when his team are on attack is an added bonus.
In the past three years with the ‘Saints’, Nathaniel has been one of the clubs more consistent performers as they’ve propelled up the league. His performances have also seen the defender break into the England set-up in 2014, he now has five caps for his national side.
Importantly Nathaniel Clyne also has a fantastic attitude that should instantly endear himself to the Anfield faithful. After starting out in the Championship with Crystal Palace, he was soon attracting scouts from various teams in the English Premier League (EPL). Instead of joining one of the bigger more established sides in England’s top flight Clyne chose to sign on for newly promoted Southampton.
That was very astute from the defender as it meant that he would play more often. During the last three seasons Clyne has appeared ninety-five times for the Saints in the EPL. He would have struggled to get that sort of exposure had he joined a ‘bigger’ side in his early twenties. Its also the complete opposite of Raheem Sterling, who seems to have got too big for his boots and wants to leave Liverpool this summer.
Getting the twenty-five year old Clyne for a £12.5m fee is also superb for Brendan Rodgers. Obviously it helps that the player only has one year left on his contract.
It’s really quite simple, by bringing in Nathaniel Clyne Liverpool will instantly improve their squad.
That is how business should be done in the summer. Get in early, make an impact and improve your team!
