A Fully Fit Bastian Schweinsteiger Could Be A Real Gem For Manchester United
Manchester United have just announced that World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger will be joining ‘Red Devils’ from Bayern Munich this summer.
The deal will be completed as soon as the German midfielder completes his medical. It’s a move that signals United’s intent to bring in the best quality available during this transfer window.
There is no doubting Schweinsteiger’s talents. Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal knows the player well after Bastian excelled under the Dutchman when they worked together at Bayern.
I suppose the main thing that will concern United fans is Schweinsteiger’s injury concerns.
Last season the middleman only made twenty appearances (fifteen starts) in the Bundesliga. Although he also managed five more starts in the Champions League. Much of his campaign was hampered by a knee problem and niggling ankle injuries. He would then struggle to dislodge Xabi Alonso from his position in Munich’s starting eleven.
Given Man Utd’s problems with too many stars wearing out their medical table last season, it’s only natural that Schweinsteiger’s recent injury issues would worry some at Old Trafford.
But the thirty year old ended his season well with the German champions, scoring two in his last two games plus gaining two assists in a win over Barcelona.
Even in a season that was curtailed by injury the midfield maestro still managed to grab five goals and eight assists.
Bayern manager Pep Guardiola will be disappointed to lose the player, who he clearly wanted to keep in his squad:
“If he stays, that would be the perfect decision for me. He is a top player.”
His signing could be a real coup for Van Gaal and United. By bringing in the German internationalist, they shall be gaining a warrior who gives his all on the pitch.
They’ll also have a true champion, who plays to win. Much in the tradition of United players from the Fergie era.
Schweinsteiger will command respect as soon as he enters the Old Trafford dressing room. Not only will he cover every blade of grass, give the side defence splitting passes and grab the odd vital goal but he’ll also have a medal haul that consists of eight Bundesliga titles, seven German Cup triumphs, a Champions League win, a UEFA Super Cup and a World Club Cup.
Bastian will also give Van Gaal a midfield general that he can trust and who uses the ball well. Hardly a season goes by when the German maestro doesn’t reach a passing success rate of 89%.
His ability to score from long range and deliver dangerous crosses from set-pieces will be welcome too.
For Bayern and the German national team, Schweinsteiger has been one of the main masterminds that helped create a huge amount of success for both club and country. It’s that Bastian Schweinsteiger that United’s faithful will be hoping that turns up next term.
Bringing in an intelligent central midfielder like Bastian could really help Angel di Maria at Man Utd, if Louis van Gaal can start playing the Argentine wizard on the wings!
I’d imagine that Bastian Schweinsteiger will be joining Manchester United with a huge hunger to succeed at another club in another country. This move could could really reignite the German’s career and give him a new ease of life on the football field.
Let’s just hope he doesn’t have the same luck that another former Bayern Munich alumni had when he left for Manchester Utd, one Owen Hargreaves!
