Can Everton Really Finish Above Liverpool This Season?
No one can deny that Everton have made waves this summer during the transfer window.
They’ve just unveiled Wayne Rooney as their new signing. The thirty-one year old returns after leaving the club thirteen years ago. He comes back as England’s all-time leading goalscorer and the Premier League’s second top scorer ever!
Listening to Rooney, he seems delighted to be back at Goodison and determined to spearhead a new golden era at the club:
“I want to play, to win and be successful at this club.”
Toffee’s boss Ronald Koeman has also brought in England Under-21 goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The goalie arrives after concluding a £30m deal. He was one of Sunderland’s only plus points last term and earned plaudits from many of the game’s best pundits!
Burnley stalwart and current England international defender Michael Keane also joined the Toffees for a fee that could rise to £30m. The centre-back was one of the Premier League’s top defensive stars last term and could form a formidable partnership with Ashley Williams.
Dutch attacking midfielder Davy Klaassen has joined for £23m from Ajax. He was one of the Amsterdam club’s top performers in their run to the Europa League final in June.
Everton have also snapped up Spanish Under-21 striker Sandro Ramirez. The forward grabbed fourteen strikes in thirty La Liga outings last season and cost just £5.25m.
Those deals have been great for Everton and show that Koeman is now benefitting from owner Farhad Moshiri’s spending power and Director of Football Steve Walsh’s nous in the transfer market.
Quite a few Toffees now believe that Everton can leapfrog Liverpool in the Premier League table and even secure a top four finish in 2018!

Although Everton have acted with due diligence in the transfer window, they still need more signings. Then they will need to cope that all their new buys can quickly gel together with the current crop of Everton stars.
They’ve just sold their top scorer in Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United. They will need to reinvest some of that £75m on a proven goalscorer.
They will also look at bringing in a few more capable faces known to the Premier League faces. Names such as Oliver Giroud and Gylfi Sigurdsson have been linked heavily.
Replacing Lukaku’s twenty-five goals will be vital in getting as high a league place as possible.
Compared to their Merseyside rivals, Liverpool have been fairly pedestrian in the transfer market as of late.
That being said the Reds have broken their transfer record when they signed Mohamed Salah from Roma.
The only other new signing has been young English prospect Dominic Solanke from Chelsea.
It should be noted that Jurgen Klopp’s need for more new recruits isn’t as high as Koeman’s was.
Liverpool finished fourth last season and that means they have a chance of cashing in on the Champions League pot this year. But being in Europe’s elite club competition could make it tougher for Klopp’s men in the Premier League as they try to balance the fixture pile-up.
In the eyes of many Liverpool fans, keeping hold of Philippe Coutinho will be as big as any Everton signing this summer. He’s a match winning maestro and has caught the eye of Barcelona and PSG.
If the Reds have any weak areas then it’s surely in defence. They still need a world-class goalkeeper and they probably need one or two more defensive recruits, just to make competition for places more fierce.
At the moment I think that continuity at Liverpool will still see them edge Everton out, in terms of finishing higher in the league.
But the fact that people are actually discussing the chances of the Toffees leapfrogging their rivals shows that excitement levels are high at Goodison and that the Merseyside derbies could be huge this year!
