Manchester United Only Need One More Signing

Jose Mourinho wanted at least four new faces to join Manchester United earlier this summer.

This month the United boss stated he would now be happy with three signings considering the volatile transfer window.

The signings of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof mean that the Old Trafford club have already purchased at least two of their targeted four new signings.

But looking that the Man Utd squad, I think they only actually need one more signing to become Premier League title challengers. If you enjoy betting on United then you should check-out these Free bets.

Mourinho has been linked with wingers, fullbacks and defensive midfielders. In my opinion, recruiting a holding central midfielder could be the key in getting United back to their best. They already have decent depth in the other two areas.

Ander Herrera is definetly a combative figure in the midfield but he’s not the best sitting in-front of the defence, the Spaniard is better deployed slightly further forward beside Paul Pogba.

Belgian strongman Marouane Fellaini isn’t disciplined enough to anchor the midfield, Jose sees him as an impact player who can be at his best in the penalty area as a target for direct balls.

Club captain Michael Carrick can certainly play there but at thirty-five years of age he no longer has the legs to play the full ninety minutes continually in a hectic season.

A new defensive minded midfielder would add strength in the engine room and would also balance the team out.

It looks increasingly likely that the Red Devils will sign Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic. It’s been reported that a deal to bring the Serbian north is close to being concluded.

His signature would greatly enhance Manchester United’s chances of bagging their first league title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

Matic has plenty of English top flight experience and importantly he will bring a winning mentality. He has won the Portuguese Primeira Liga title and two Premier League triumphs with Chelsea.

Last season Antonio Conte preferred to play the Serbian international alongside N’Golo Kante ahead of Cesc Fabregas. That should show you that Nemanja’s ability is well respected.

The twenty-eight year old has also played for Jose Mourinho before and will be used to the Portuguese manager’s ways. He was a key player in Jose’s Chelsea title winning team in 2015. Both the player and the boss seem determined to work together again.

Mourinho once proclaimed “The man is a giant” when describing a fine performance from Nemanja Matic.

Matic will offer United the defensive discipline that they have been craving for in midfield. He’s very good at covering the ground and his presence in the middle would allow players like Paul Pogba more license to venture forward without worrying about leaving a hole behind him.

He also adds more height and strength in a vital area for United.

Importantly the defensive midfielder is also very strong in the tackle and winning the ball back for his team. No other central midfield star has made more tackles in midfield than Matic since his return to Chelsea in January 2014.

While Jose would no doubt still like a new winger or possibly a new fullback, I believe his priority is getting a new holding midfielder through the door and that signing could be the move that brings the club closer to glory!

  1. United need TWO defensive midfielders – Barcelona proved that Carrick cannot cut it during pre season (that was in the first half, forget 90 minutes).

William Carvalho would be a good option for defensive midfield and Matic until Dier gets near the end of his contract and can pressure levy to let him leave Spurs.

Renato Sanches is more of an attack minded midfielder, but could offer cover for Herrera / Pogba.
