Spurs Will Be Fine At Wembley!

A defeat isn’t really a good thing, especially when you lose to your local rivals.

English Premier League champions Chelsea managed to edge out Tottenham Hotspur during their  encounter yesterday.

Many were quick to insinuate that Spurs playing their home games at Wembley was a major factor in their loss but I just can’t subscribe to that theory.

Tottenham had the lion’s share of possession and created more chances than their opponents. In the end they just didn’t stick enough of those chances away and were a bit unlucky.

Chelsea stuck to a game plan and deserve credit for keeping their concentration. They showed mental strength and it was enough to get them the three points on the day.

I just don’t think Mauricio Pochettino and his men should be too despondent about the result, on another day they would have won the game by one or two goals.

Only Kyle Walker has departed the squad since they finished as Premier League runners-up last term. He’s arguably the easiest player they could’ve replaced, since they had Kieran Trippier already within their ranks.

The arrival of promising centre-back Davinson Sanchez seems to be imminent and influential Argentine forward Erik Lamela could be back amongst the first team in September after a long spell on the sidelines, his return could be as good as a new signing.

Pochettino, like myself, doesn’t think Wembley was to blame for the Chelsea loss:

“But I understand that we need to talk, everyone needs to talk. But I think the ‘Wembley effect’ is not the reason we lost the game. The team played really well. It’s not fair to blame Wembley. For me, Wembley is one of the best places in the world. One of the best places to play football.”

Obviously finding their first competitive home win will be important for this Spurs team. Just to get the monkey (Wembley curse) off their back will give the team renewed focus and confidence. The longer they go without a home victory the bigger the distraction gets and the more important it becomes.

If they can play as they did against Chelsea at Wembley next week against Burnley and can create clear cut chances then I don’t doubt that they’ll win that one. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see hitman Harry Kane break his August goal drought either, the England international striker is visibly itching to get back on the score-sheet.

With such a strong and balanced starting eleven I just can’t see Spurs not winning a considerable amount at their temporary new home. Once they go on a wee unbeaten run you’ll get the Tottenham Hotspur faithful saying ‘Wembley curse? What Wembley curse?’.

  1. I don’t go along with this “Wembley factor” affecting the way Spurs play by it not being WHL. Spurs will be playing all the other PL teams this season a total of 19 times, plus other competitions there. Wembley being unfamiliar must apply to all those other PL teams, but they will each play there just the one time only. So Spurs must surely gain an advantage over the others by becoming more and more familiar there with each match taking place. They have already played there a number of times last season and I believe it wouldn’t take long before it begins to feel like their home ground. It certainly started to look like that against Chelsea, regardless of the end result. But it will continue to be unfamiliar and strange for all other team right through the season and this must be of benefit to Spurs. Then next season all teams will have to go through it all over again when Spurs move into their new stadium and I reckon they will again have an advantage over the others for the same reason.

  3. dear Tottenham try to sign quality players
than wasting lot of money on a single player.

    try to buy Stephan El
Shaarawy because until lamela comes we want pace in wembley. pacey attacking play can suit wembley for Tottenham. pressing will be more strongly done. he is more accurate than Eriksen in free kicks. and he can be used as forward with kane…

lamela will partner with Stephan El
    Shaarawy.
he is a champions League secret weapon.

he is not getting his top form due club transfer to other clubs. if he gets a permanent role in Tottenham first team under pochetino. he can become smiliar to messi.. he will extremely suit for Tottenham.

i guaranteed about him. he won’t be like a lamela signing. will not be late to get form in Tottenham. mostly Italian players really suits epl 80%.

    he is such hard worker.

if barca or real Madrid sign it will be a like buying Ronaldo or messi…

  4. if Tottenham want to become like Chelsea or city. to go to next level.

splashing money on Stephen el sharrawy makes some sense.

that’s worth buying!!! then we can see Tottenham form…
