Manchester United Should Rush To Tie Down Jose Mourinho
Sometimes you just can’t wait and see, you need to act fast or lose out.
I think Jose Mourinho’s words about one day managing PSG were a warning to his current employers Manchester United more than a true desire to coach in Ligue 1.
The Portuguese boss only has two years left on his current United deal and I think he’s itching to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.
Speculation has been rife since the coach has decided not to move his family up north, instead the Mourinho brood have stayed down in London with Jose choosing to stay in a local hotel.
While that’s not ideal, I still think the tradition and ambition you get at Man United is one that Jose craves and it will keep him there. He’s desperate to bring the club their first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
People have also been critical of Mourinho’s defensive style, especially after the side’s goalless draw with rivals Liverpool this past weekend. But Jose has never cared about that particular critique and actually thrives in upsetting the media and rival bosses.
The other thing about the style issue is that it doesn’t necessarily win you titles. Liverpool and Spurs have been great teams to watch in recent years yet they’ve not managed to turn that pretty football into trophies. Plus Jose’s teams are far better to watch than the United teams David Moyes and Louis van Gaal produced during their tenures with the Red Devils.
I also think Jose has his mojo back and is enjoying his stint at Old Trafford. The once self proclaimed ‘Special One‘ has enjoyed rebuilding the United squad and while the defence has been fiercely mean, the forward line have also banged in twenty-one times and only Manchester City can boast a better record so far this time.
In his debut season, Jose managed to bring the League Cup and Europa League trophies back to Manchester. Those wins have given the squad much needed confidence and the added personnel in Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof gives Man Utd added balance in their side.
It now looks like it will be between Man United and Man City or Jose Mourinho versus Pep Guardiola for the Premier League title. The fact that the red half of Manchester are back in such a strong position shows you what a fine job their manager has done.
That’s why Man United’s hierarchy need to get an exciting offer on the table to keep Jose at the club for a longer spell.
I think the fifty-four year old actually wants to make United his team and the club that he sticks with for the longest period of time. I honestly believe that he’ll want to beat his previous record of four years at one club and to bring the Red Devils back to the fore of English and European football.
Do I think he will be there for the rest of his career?
No probably not, I think Jose will want to give somewhere else a bash and also look at international management before he retires. But that could be after a six or seven year stay at Old Trafford as long as he doesn’t lose the dressing room or the club’s loyal fanbase.
