What Would Signing Nabil Fekir Add At Liverpool?

Depending on where you get your news from; Nabil Fekir’s agent is either in Liverpool to conclude a deal with the Merseyside giants or Bayern Munich have entered the race to sign the attacker and that could spark a bidding war for his services.

You can bet your bottom dollar that Lyon owner Jean-Michel Aulas will be hoping that the Bundesliga club also want the Frenchman and are willing to push the price up on any potential deal.

But let’s say that Liverpool do get their man, what would he add to their current squad?

Well firstly he adds more competition. When you looked at the two benches during the recent Champions League final, you could tell that Real Madrid had more and better options to bring on a game changing  player. That’s exactly what happened when Garteh Bale entered the field during the second half and helped secure the trophy for the La Liga side.

Fekir, along with new recruits Naby Keita and Fabinho, would give Jurgen Klopp more options to change the team’s style and formation before or during a game.

While Fekir is a top-class number ten, the French internationalist can also play as a centre forward or wide on the right. He can even play as a central midfielder, if needed.

That means that Klopp can continue on with the successful 4-3-3 or move to a 4-2-2-2 or have Nabil in behind the main striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Having more. and better, faces within the pool should give Liverpool an even greater chance of challenging on all fronts next season. They were the team that caused English Premier League champions Manchester City the most problems in one on one encounters but they simply weren’t as consistent throughout the season as Pep Guardiola’s men. The odd injuries, some fatigue issues and the lack of proper rotation in some positions hampered them.

Obviously they’ll still need to bring in a goalkeeper, probably a centre-back and maybe even another striker too.

Nabil Fekir the player, would also give Liverpool a greater attacking threat.

He’d probably be the inspirational, creative force that The Reds have been missing since Philippe Coutinho left Anfield for FC Barcelona in January.

For Lyon last term, the twenty-four year old scored twenty-three goals (nineteen as a central attacking midfielder) and provided nine assists for his teammates. He also managed a passing success rate that averaged over 85%.

Fekir’s excellent close control, his scintillating dribbling technique and his versatility mean that he’d easily work well with Liverpool’s fluid forward line and their exciting, explosive attacking approach.

His ability to find a through ball and provide accurate well driven-in crosses should also have Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino rubbing their hands with glee as they think of the possible ammunition that Nabil could provide them with next term.

The forward thinking player is also a threat from set-pieces, whether it be through a creative pass or a shot at goal. Plus he’s a big game player too, in Lyon’s 2-1 win over PSG Fekir scored an early free-kick before setting up Memphis Depay for his late winner.

All in all, Liverpool would be greatly enhancing their squad if they can convince Nabil Fekir to join Jurgen Klopp’s ambitious project at Anfield.

He’ll bring in even more attacking edge and the squad will be brimming with more talent than they had last season and that will be an key ingredient if Liverpool want to end their long wait for a top flight title!

  1. I’d be excited to see him come in. We’re looking good in a number of positions but GK, back up CB and, as you say above, an alternative forward option. Lallana and Ox are good but they seem better coming from deep and not in the forward 3. We could do with another free kick specialist which I believe he is?
