One More Statement Signing Could Turn Liverpool Into Legends
As the dust settles on the Boxing Day results, Liverpool will be pleased as punch with how things went down for them during the festive period.
The Reds have played seven times so far in December and have won each and every fixture. That’s seen Jurgen Klopp’s men secure a passage into the knock-out stages of the Champions League and it’s also seen them take top spot in the Premier League, which they lead by six clear points!
Now we are only halfway through the season, Liverpool still have to go through another nineteen games as they try and secure their first Premier League title and their first top tier title since 1990.
It’s going to be an exciting and nervy ride for the Reds faithful.
When you look at the current Liverpool squad you’ll be hard pushed to find many flaws but I wonder if Mr Klopp might believe that he can bring in one more big name to help the push.
I’m pretty sure the German boss won’t bring in too many new faces this January, Jurgen is very protective of his pool of players and it’s harmony. He won’t flood the side with too many new recruits as that will unsettle the balance of his squad.
But bringing in just one more star turn could give the Merseyside giants that edge as they aim to become legends!
For me, I think Liverpool could do with adding yet another attacking powerhouse to their forward options.
Defensively, the Anfield side have never looked so good. The additions of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson in the last two transfer windows have significantly improved things in Liverpool’s backline. The team have only conceded seven times so far this term and that’s eight goals fewer than Manchester City (who have the second best defensive record in the league).
The summer additions of Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabinho and Naby Keita have also strengthened the team’s depth and has given them a better squad as they look to add major silverware to the club’s trophy cabinet.
I believe if Liverpool are looking to bring in a new face, then it will be a new forward.
They haven’t scored as many as Pep Guardiola’s Man City and have only just scored one or two more than Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
Now there’s no doubting the credentials and qualities of Liverpool’s main front three.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are all fantastic talents but they might get injured or need a rest as the season continues.
Firmino has only scored four times in the Premier League this term and could be better served if he was given a bit of a rest.
You’ve then got Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Dominic Solanke. All three have their own attributes and Sturridge and Origi have both made an impact in this campaign but they aren’t top drawer replacements who’ll push to start ahead of the regular front three, even if those guys have a few stinkers.
Sturridge’s career has stalled due to injuries and he’s never got back to the form he showed in 2014, when he bagged over twenty league goals. The fact is that he hasn’t scored double figures in the top flight since that season.
Dominic Solanke seems to have real potential and he does offer something different to the rest of the forwards in the team but the twenty-one year old forward hasn’t played competitively for The Reds so far this season. I believe Klopp will allow Solanke to go out on loan and get more first team action elsewhere, with Sky Sports reporting that Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town are battling it out to bring the striker in for the rest of the season.
Origi was mainly forgotten about this year until the Belgian international managed to grab a dramatic winner against Everton in the Merseyside derby earlier this month. He’s another player that seems to have bags of potential but probably needs to move away and get first team football elsewhere to realise that potential.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Klopp allowed two of those fringe forwards to leave Anfield this winter, if it allowed him to bring in a new dynamic attacker who can improve the frontline.
Media outlets are speculating frantically which forwards Liverpool could be trying to attract this January.
Goal.com have linked The Reds with a move for Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele, Talksport are suggesting that RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner could be Liverpool’s next striker and The Mirror have them chasing attacking threat Christian Pulisic of Borussia Dortmund.
If Liverpool were to sign someone like a Dembele, a Werner or a Pulisic then I believe they’d have a stronger squad and one that might just bring them the Premier League title!
