The Dutch Winger That’s Interesting Manchester United & Tottenham Hotspur

Both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked, by The Sun, with PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn during this winter transfer window.

Inside Futbol has stated that the Eredivisie champions want at least €30m for the Dutchman.

So what would either Premier League giant get if they managed to sign Steven Bergwijn?

Well they’d be getting a talented twenty-one year old, who has already won two senior international caps with The Netherlands.

The wideman has made seventy-eight first-team league appearances for PSV and scored eighteen goals. He’s also helped his side win three Dutch league titles and in 2014 he won the Golden Player award at the UEFA European U-17 Championships.

Steven is a creative live-wire who can play on either wing. He likes to be direct and attack opposition defences with his quick feet and his ability to skip passed incoming challenges.

He’s played twenty-five times so far thus season; once through the middle, thirteen times on the left and eleven on the right.

The youngster is technically very sound, he’s happy with that ball at his feet and he enjoys a dribble.

According to Whoscored; the winger takes around 2.8 shots on per league game, on average this season he’s managed an 85% passing success rate, makes around 3 successful dribbles per 90 minutes and has an eye for a key pass (making on average 2.5 per league appearance).

This term the young forward has notched up nine league goals in seventeen outings and assisted in another eight goals for teammates.

Looking at him, he would certainly seem to fit the profile required to play at either Man Utd or Spurs. He’s young, technically gifted, efficient with the ball, strong and composed in the final third and he will excite the home support.

Tottenham need more attacking options, while I still believe United need a consistent star to shine on their right wing!

It’s not all positive:

Bergwijn isn’t known for his defensive contribution but under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Man United haven’t been as keen to their attackers back to defend as they were under former boss Jose Mourinho.

United will also be reminded that things didn’t work out the last time they signed a young exciting winger from the Netherlands. Memphis Depay just didn’t consistently get the job done at Old Trafford and he was then sold on to Lyon. That failure might make the Red Devils think twice regarding a move for Steven Bergwijn.

Tottenham might feel that they need a centre-forward during this window and might wait and see if they can get Steven in the summer.

With all that being said, a €30m fee for an exciting talent that’s made over seventy Dutch league appearances by twenty-one years of age and has Champions League experience will make sense for many major clubs.

It will be very interesting to see if either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur will bite the bullet and make a concrete move for one of The Netherlands’ brightest talents.
