Miguel Almiron Could Become Newcastle United’s Saviour

The BBC are reporting that Newcastle United are on the verge of signing Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron.

It’s believed that the fee for the transfer is £20m, breaking The Toon’s previous £16m record signing. That news alone could revitalise the club who have been a bit down with one thing and an other this month.

Newcastle Utd boss Rafa Benitez stated curtly to the Chronicle Live that he didn’t wish to discuss transfer business:

“It is not a question for me because I don’t talk about the transfer window,”

I’d expect the Spaniard would be delight to talk about Almiron if he were to parade the talented playmaker at St James’ Park.

So what will the Premier League side get if they sign the Major League Soccer (MLS) talent?

Well he’s an extremely talented and creative attacker.

The twenty-four year old can play as a left-winger, a central midfielder, a makeshift centre-forward and as an attacking number ten. In the last MLS season he played predominantly in the hole behind the main striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation. He could in a similar role in Rafa’s favoured 4-4-1-1 formation. That allows him to get on the ball in vital forward areas, allowing him to create chances or take efforts at goal.

In thirty-seven MLS fixtures, Miguel contributed big time as Atlanta United reached and won the MLS Cup. The forward thinking player scored thirteen goals and created eleven assists. Whoscored states that he made around 2.2 key passes per game, on average he makes over 44 passes per game and has an 81.9% passing success rate.

Miguel Almiron is a flamboyant, attacking youngster. He loves a dribble and he possesses the skills and ball control to run directly at opponents and then skip beyond their challenges. He also has the awareness and passing ability to slip in wonderful through balls. Miguel is also confident enough to step-up and take his team’s set-pieces.

His partnership with main striker Josef Martinez at Atalanta Utd, shows us that the twenty-five year old can get the best out of his goalscoring partners. Benitez would hope that he could be the key to get more from a hitman like Salomon Rondon.

The South American international has also impressed in his homeland with Cerro Porteno and in Argentina during his spell with Lanus. He’s won both the Paraguayan Primera Division and the Argentine Primera Division during his short career. So Almiron isn’t just a one hit wonder from America.

Almiron would be the type of player that would excite the Toon support He’s versatile and has an attacking flourish that should excite the home fans. He also has a keen eye for goal and The Magpies could do with another goal threat in their pool. He’s also quick enough in transition and a footballer that can make things happen on the counter attack.

It’s a big deal for Mike Ashley to part with such a big sum for a footballer but if Miguel Almiron joins Newcastle United and fulfils his potential there then he’ll become a huge fan favourite, help save them from relegation and then to Ashley’s delight his value will sky rocket.

It’ll be interesting to see if The Toon sign up the talented playmaker and if he can turn on the magic at the Tyne.
