Erling Haaland – The Best Young Striker In European Football

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has already eclipsed his best goal tally for a season since turning professional as, at the time of writing, he’s netted on thirty-three occasions in all competitions.

By the time the campaign is up, Haaland could be close to fifty goals. Getting to a half-century in one season will put him up there with the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. These are players who consistently finish around that mark each year.

The twenty year old has looked particularly impressive this season in the Champions League. He has scored ten goals in six matches for his German club. He’s well placed with sports betting at Betfair to finish as the top goalscorer in the premier European competition. Haaland is the fastest and youngest player to score twenty Champions League goals in his career. He beat Tottenham striker Harry Kane’s record in doing so. He scored eight times in the Champions League for Salzburg before he moved to his current club.

Dortmund defeated Sevilla 5-4 (UEFA Match Report) over two legs in the last 16 of this season’s competition last month. Haaland was on the scoresheet three times across those two matches, including a vital brace in the second leg. His side will now face the favourites Manchester City in the quarter-final.

Move To Dortmund Helped Him Join The Elite

Haaland transferred from Salzburg to Dortmund in the summer of 2019. Since making that switch to the Bundesliga, he has scored 49 goals in 49 appearances. In 2020 he was named the Golden Boy (Source ESPN), an award given to the most impressive young player under 21 playing in Europe’s major leagues.

Dortmund have a history of signing talented young players and helping them to develop into bigger stars. Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ousmane Dembele and Christian Pulisic have all flourished there and then moved on to other big clubs.

Haaland will now be hoping he can win some silverware with Dortmund. Their title bid is not going as well as they would have liked it to this season. They trail leaders Bayern Munich by eighteen points. It could still be a good campaign for the Black and Yellows as they are in the semi-final of the DFL-Supercup and remain one of the strong contenders for the Champions League.

What Does The Future Hold For The Norwegian?

The Dortmund striker is being linked with several major clubs this summer, including Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid (Via Express). It remains to be seen if he sees his future with the German club or elsewhere.

If he is sold by Dortmund, he is likely to demand a much bigger transfer fee than what they paid for him in 2019. Many top clubs will be looking for a striker when the transfer window reopens in Europe and Haaland is sure to be at the top of their list.

At the age of just twenty, Haaland should continue to get better. With Messi and Ronaldo at the back end of their careers, he has the potential to become the best player in Europe.

Erling Haaland has played down any transfer talk for now. He is fully concentrating on helping his club and country over the next few months in what is going to be a crucial period for him!
