Why Losing Juan Wont Mata To Chelsea
According to media reports, Juan Mata is about to seal a move to Manchester United for a fee believed to be between £35m-£40m.
But can Chelsea afford to lose a player who has been voted their player of the year in the past two seasons? Especially to rivals like United.
Well I would say so.
If Chelsea are ready to do business with the ‘Red Devils’ then its because Jose Mourinho doesn’t see David Moyes’ men as serious competitors this term.
The timing of the move couldn’t have been any better for the Londoners. In the winter transfer window they will get a premium price for the Spaniard. The fact is Man Utd are desperate for a big name player and that desperation will add on a few million onto the fee. Then we have to remember that Chelsea have now faced United twice this season, they can’t meet them again in the league (Mata will be cup-tied for the Champions League). So he can’t return to physically haunt them in this campaign, in fact he can help Chelsea if he moves to Old Trafford and does well against fellow title challengers Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool.
Then you have to think about Mata’s attitude. He always seemed a bubbly character at the ‘Bridge’ liked by his teammates and the fans. But since Jose returned Juan Mata has grown into more of a frustrated and moody player as he constantly kicks his heels on the subs bench or gets hauled off after starting the odd game.
Even if he isn’t vocal in his disappointment, just his demeanour can create a negative atmosphere in the Chelsea dressing room.
Mourinho also doesn’t really need the Spaniard with Oscar, Eden Hazard, Willian and Andre Schurrle all vying for the same positions. They have also just agreed a deal to recruit 21 year old Mohamed Salah from Basel.
With Mata’s lack of defensive discipline counts against Mata when Jose selects his first eleven.
I am a huge fan of Mata, he is a splendid player but he just isn’t Jose’s cup of tea and for that reason its best for all concerned that the former Valencia man leaves.
Now is he what Manchester Utd need?
In some ways, no not really. A ball winning central midfielder or a defender should possibly be higher priorities. Then you look at the Utd side and the formation they currently play and wonder where will he play? On the left would be a bit of a waste. But maybe David Moyes plans on changing the system after seeing his side fall off title challenging pace.
Then there is the issue of simply boosting morale within the whole club by making such a stand -out signing. Mesut Ozil’s mere presence lifted the mood at the Emirates and look at Arsenal now.
Also Spanish internationalist must be hungry to prove himself once again and showing everyone he is still one of the best playmakers in the EPL.
For me its a no brainer for Chelsea and they will keep the cash and bring in a top striker this summer. For United it will be interesting to see if its all just came a bit too late in the season to really matter!
