Chelsea Should Make A Firm Offer For Goal Machine Gonzalo Higuain
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are holding talks with Serie A giants Juventus and AC Milan in the hope of securing a deal for striker Gonzalo Higuain.
The Blues have been linked with the Argentine hitman for a while but the deal looked to be dead once Gonzalo signed a loan deal to spend this season at Milan.
But the Rossoneri have had an inconsistent season so far and they might be worried about potential FFP punishments that could be handed to them in the near future.
It’s thought that Milan would be willing to let Chelsea takeover their loan deal for Higuain as they would then not need to pay Juve the £8m that they owe as part of that deal and save on his £140k a week wage.
The London club could offer up Alvaro Morata or/and Cesc Fabregas in return.
Morata has never looked settled at Stamford Bridge. He’s not been a terrible signing, he’s just not been as consistent in front of goal as The Blues were hoping for from him. Fabregas’ contract runs out in the summer of 2019 and I believe Chelsea could facilitate a free move to Milan if it helps get them Higuain.
After a very bright start to the season, Chelsea have gone off the boil in recent weeks. Although they did impress when they beat Premier League champions Manchester City, earlier in December.
Yesterday, they lost at home to Leicester City by a 1-0 scoreline. If you look at the BBC Sport report then you’ll notice that Chelsea bossed possession, had a greater number of shots and had more shots on target too. That fact is that they just couldn’t stick any chances away.
The team seem to rely on the creativity and the goals that Eden Hazard brings to the team but the Belgian maestro isn’t known as a prolific frontman. He currently leads the club’s scoring charts with eight league strikes to his name.
Main strikers Morata and Olivier Giroud just don’t seem to score as regularly as a Top Four club would want from a number nine.
Blues boss Maurizio Sarri knows Higuain well, from their days to together at Napoli and will believe that the Argentine forward can be the man the fires in more goals for his team.
Gonzalo scored thirty-six Serie A goals in just thirty-five games in his one season working under Sarri in Naples.
After Higuain left Napoli for rivals Juventus, Maurizio stated he couldn’t stay angry at the attacker because he saw Gonzalo as a son (Via Fox Sport Asia):
“For a while I didn’t hear from him and, to be honest, I didn’t want to hear from him. It’s like when your son makes you angry: For a few days you feel like tearing into him, but at the end of the day he remains your son.”
You can see that Sarri clearly believes in the player and they both know how each other works. I also think that the Argentine intentional would love playing alongside Hazard, Pedro and Willian.
The thirty-one year old striker has bagged five goals in thirteen league games this term. Like most AC Milan stars this term, he’s found consistency hard to come by but he’s still managing 3.7 shots per game according to WhoScored.
The forward hasn’t scored in his last eight appearances for Milan and he had a meltdown against parent side Juve, where he received a red card for his on-field tantrum. It looked as though the hitman could be ready to leave Italy and kickstart his career elsewhere.
Chelsea could really be doing with a free scoring centre-forward and Gonzalo Higuain might be that man. He works well in the Sarri style and he could be ready for a change. If The Blues can takeover Milan’s loan deal for the player, then the Premier League giants will have six months to see if he can bang in the goals in England.
